Audrey paused slightly in her right hand, then resumed, picking up the mask known as "Arrogance." "A 50% chance isn't low," she simply replied to Paul Delaure. This conveyed that it was no coincidence that she had chosen the mask once worn by Hewin Lambis, in a situation where only one of two options was available. As soon as she placed the cold, gray-white mask over her face, she felt, almost instantly, as though a new "virtual personality" had emerged within her mental island. This was not derived from the outside world, but rather from an amplification and extreme manifestation of her own perception: "They have low educational attainment and must be guided by me to make correct decisions. "Not everyone possesses sufficient wisdom—on the contrary, the majority are actually quite foolish. "The workers act impulsively rather than rationally; they are easily influenced by small benefits, short-sighted, and only when I think, when I guide, when I decide can they be saved."
“They are worthy of pity, but not of conversation.” These thoughts echoed in Audrey’s mind, making her almost believe this was true—after all, they were drawn from her prior observations and experiences, not entirely imagined. In a single glance, Audrey saw herself reflected in the smooth surface of the long table: a cold, pale mask, with her two eyes lifted upward, fixed on the forehead, as though only attending to what was above, indifferent to the rest—strange, amusing, and subtly eerie. Audrey fell silent, pausing for several seconds before speaking in a low tone: “Is this what ‘arrogance’ looks like?” If not for her early exchanges with the “World” gentleman, the “Hangings” gentleman, and the “Wise One” lady, who had helped her overcome her cognitive biases, she might have been genuinely influenced by the persona projected onto her by the ‘arrogance’ mask.
As for what the consequences will be once the impact takes hold, she currently cannot determine. "You've returned to your normal pace much faster than I expected—seems you haven't gotten lost in the experience of influencing others," Delor praised. Audrey responded thoughtfully: "Mr. Hervin Lambis has always carried a certain air of arrogance..." "Do you notice that?" Delor asked, clasping his hands together over his chest. "Only occasionally, some subtle details," Audrey replied in two brief phrases. Delor sighed, shaking his head with a smile: "Hervin Lambis is affected by this persona mask more severely than I anticipated, and he usually masks it very well. Given that, I'm not surprised at his disappearance—arrogance can blind him to the path before him, cause him to underestimate exceptional individuals who are weaker than himself, and that often proves extremely dangerous."
Audrey suppressed the impulse to recall the death of Herwin Lambis and asked thoughtfully, "Can these seven personality masks amplify corresponding cognition and emotions, helping us become aware of our own issues and thus address them specifically? At the same time, do they bring certain negative effects, subtly transforming the wearer's personality over time?" Delaure nodded slightly. "In the realm of the mind, it's rare to find purely external support that doesn't carry some form of harm. One must possess sufficient internal strength to avoid such negative impacts. The fact that you recognize this indicates you're on the right path." As Audrey prepared to use this moment to discuss certain matters in the field of the mind, she suddenly noticed that one of the personality masks on the table had vanished. Instinctively turning her head, she looked toward the church entrance and saw a figure passing through the main door, entering. The figure wore a formal three-piece suit, carried a half-high silk hat, and had the personality mask that had just disappeared resting on their face.
The mask's mouth is wide open, all the way to near the ears, and remains perpetually open, as though it were devouring everything the eyes see. "This is one of our members of the Psychological Alchemy Council, Mr. Gluttony," Delor introduced to Audrey. Subsequently, the other members of the Council arrived in turn: Mr. Libido, Ms. Greed, Miss Sloth, and Mr. Envy.
As a seasoned observer, Audrey first noticed the distinct differences in the individual masks: "Greed" and "Gluttony" were similar, with the mouth stretched all the way to the ears but not fully open, and both eyes closed; "Luxury" and "Arrogance" were alike, except that their eyes were unlike ordinary people—set lower at the mid-nasal bridge, as if gazing upward; "Jealousy" featured a noticeable tilt in the eyes, ears, mouth, and nose, accompanied by a naturally somber demeanor; "Laziness" had eyes tightly shut and the mouth naturally drooping, giving the impression that the wearer was asleep. With all the original members of the panel now in place, Delaure smiled and said: "We're just waiting for one more friend—he will be the seventh member of the panel, ah, the eighth—I forgot to count myself." As soon as he finished speaking, a figure entered through the main door of the church.
This figure wore a shirt and vest, with a black raincoat draped over his shoulders, and a half-high silk hat on his head—immediately appearing as a very stylish gentleman. Yet upon closer inspection, Odile noticed that beneath the human garments was a giant rabbit, with bright red eyes and snowy white fur. The rabbit stepped forward one pace at a time, and stopped just beside the long table, directly beside Odile. "Unfortunately, you have only one choice," Delaure smiled, pointing to the "Anger" mask on the table. "I've always been gentle," the rabbit said, speaking in a masculine human voice. "It's perfect for experiencing the feeling of anger." As it spoke, it picked up the personality mask and placed it on its face. The mask had wide, round eyes and an open mouth, as if ready to roar at any moment. When this "Anger" gentleman sat down beside Odile, Delaure lightly clapped his hands. "I'd like to formally introduce two new members of the Council," he said.
"This is Miss Pride, and this is Mr. Fury—both are half-gods with deep expertise in the realm of the mind. Miss Pride oversees the Beckett region of the Kingdom of Runa." At this point, Delor turned to Audrey and said, "You may not yet be aware that our roots lie primarily within the fields of psychologists, psychiatrists, and their enthusiasts, with our strength concentrated in major urban centers rather than smaller towns and rural areas. Therefore, each committee member is responsible for a specific city, along with its surrounding regions."
Then Delorau continued: "The Lord of Wrath is in charge of Isala, the capital of Lurnburg; The Lord of Passion is in charge of Trier, the capital of Intis; The Lady of Greed is in charge of Saint-Milon, the capital of Fasak; The Miss of Laziness is in charge of Feneport City, the capital of Feneport; The Lord of Envy is in charge of Tiris, the city of the Intis Republic; The Lord of Gluttony is in charge of Konstanz, the city of the Kingdom of Run." After this introduction, Delorau added two more remarks: "Our Psychological Alchemy Society's mission is to explore, discover, and study—our focus is not on the scope of influence, the number of members, or the extent of resources held. Therefore, we have no Council members in the Mist Sea, the Storm Sea, the Sunia Sea, or on the southern continent. Of course, our members frequently travel to the seas and to the southern continent to explore ancient ruins and trace the footsteps of old history. By the way, I myself am the 'Black Seat King' above all five seas."
Saint-Milon, Konstanz, and Tiris... nearly half of the committee members of the Psychological Alchemy Guild are based in the Intersea region. Audrey keenly noticed a problem. Born into a noble family and receiving a solid education from an early age, she was well familiar with the geographical layout of cities across the northern continent, knowing that Saint-Milon in Fesac, Konstanz in Ruhn, and Tiris in Intis were all major coastal cities along the Intersea. While they didn't quite match the scale of the three major urban centers—Bekland, Trill, and Feneport—they were all substantial in size, and surrounded by numerous medium-sized cities, making the Intersea region the most economically vibrant and populous area of the northern continent. Given this context, it was not surprising that the Psychological Alchemy Guild had its focus concentrated in the Intersea region. What Audrey found most unexpected, however, was the guild's apparent lack of interest in expansion.
After a few members of the evaluation committee had exchanged greetings, Deloray turned to Audrey and said, "Madam Prudence, due to the war's impact, the psychological Alchemy Guild in Beckland has suffered significant losses—many members have lost contact. I'll provide you with a detailed list afterward, and you'll be responsible for tracking down each of them and reorganizing them. In the process, I recommend that you not use your true identity or real name. Instead, create one or several fictional personas to carry out these tasks. Hwen Lambis, for instance, hasn't done this well—I believe he does have a touch of pride. "Audrey nodded gently, agreeing. Deloray then shifted his gaze and said, "The second matter we need to discuss today is the current status of the great spirit dragon from the eastern county of Chester in the Kingdom of Roon."
"The dragon-worship tradition in the village of Hederak has shown no signs of weakening over the past two years. I suspect the Mind Dragon is still influencing the village in some way—perhaps we can use this to trace its whereabouts. 'Who among you would like to take up this matter?' After posing the question, he remembered that the newly joined 'Proud' lady and 'Angry' gentleman had not yet gained sufficient familiarity with the situation, so he briefly outlined the earlier explorations conducted by the Psychological Alchemy Circle and the tragic fate of the entire archaeological field team.
Audrey had actually participated in some of the early efforts, and now, seeing a timely opportunity to step in, felt a flutter of excitement. She didn't intend to hunt down the Mind Dragon herself, but rather hoped to engage in dialogue with it, to gain deeper insights into the realm of minds and its hidden secrets. Yet, she didn't immediately raise her hand to accept the task. As a member attending the Council meeting for the first time, she preferred to miss the moment and not rush to make an impression."
"This is Roon's matter; we're not particularly suited to get involved."
Mr. Desire glanced around. "Unless Miss Pride and Mr. Glutton actually have no time."
Audrey waited a few more seconds, seeing that Mr. Glutton remained silent, before turning to Delaure.
"I'll make an effort to investigate, but I'll need more detailed information."
